Teaching In Difficult Times

John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a community that comprises of over 15,000 students, faculty and staff from different hemispheres across the world. The college is located in the heart of Manhattan, NYC and is a community that is not sealed off from the surrounding world. Therefore, our community feels sometimes powerful and sometimes painful which is often caused from the effects of critical local, national, and international events. Our students may be deeply and constructively engaged with these international and national events, and news coverage which may unsettle and even traumatize them.

Therefore, we must note that faculty in the classroom are in a unique position to help students access the different resources and support they need keeping in mind that all students are different. Students share that they are in need of spaces to engage these issues beyond their peers and residential environments and are hungry for faculty to take on these important roles.
